Gum Disease is Cause for Serious Concern

gum disease

Gum disease is a global health issue. The condition, also known as periodontitis, affects nearly 20 percent of the world’s population. In the United States, more than 75 percent of adults are suffering from some form of gum disease and more than half are unaware of the condition. The issue is severe because gum disease is an aggressive condition that can result in the loss of teeth and is often an early warning sign of other whole body diseases. The good news is that gum disease can be prevented with diligence to routine dental care habits and regular visits to your dentist.

Gum disease, also called periodontal disease, doesn’t always come with obvious warning signs—that’s where routine visits to your dentist in Columbia can come in handy. However, in most cases, there are signs and symptoms you can identify on your own. Pay attention to your oral health and daily dental care regimen. Recognize the signs and consult your dentist immediately for periodontal treatment:

Signs and Symptoms of Periodontal Disease

  • Red and swollen gums
  • Bleeding when brushing
  • Pain while chewing
  • Consistent bad breath
  • Foul taste in the mouth that never seems to go away
  • Loose teeth

Periodontal Disease Treatment

In the event that you do develop gum disease, getting periodontal treatment early can keep you from gum surgery or, worse, losing all your teeth.

Periodontal treatment is not a pain-free experience. Your dental care professional will work carefully to scrape the tartar off the teeth and around gum line. In early stages of the diseases, intensive professional cleaning and routine dental care and monitoring between you and your dentist can prevent further development.

In severe cases, however, your dental care team may recommend gum surgery.  It is always recommended to seek a second opinion before embarking on any major surgery.

Prevent and Reverse Periodontal Disease

Brush properly, thoroughly and often. Although brushing twice a day is recommended, brushing after every meal can better combat the development of tartar and bacteria that can lead to gum disease. Be certain to brush for at least two minutes, dividing the mouth into quadrants and giving careful attention to every area of the mouth.

Brush your tongue back to front, using your toothbrush or tongue scraper to remove additional bacteria.

Floss daily to loosen bacteria and food debris that settles along the gum line and between teeth and is often unable to be reached by a toothbrush.

Follow brushing by rinsing with antimicrobial mouthwash, which can get between the teeth in a way that a toothbrush and other tools cannot. Look for products that are advertised to “kill germs that cause bad breath, plaque and gingivitis” and are approved by the American Dental Association.
