How to Handle a Dental Emergency

dca-blog_dental-emergencies-first-aid-kit

A dental emergency rarely strikes when you’re fully prepared. Emergencies can occur when you’re eating dinner, playing tennis, or reading a book, and they often happen late at night or on weekends. Getting emergency dental treatment promptly is always important in a crisis, but there are also steps you can take to boost your chances of saving a tooth before you can reach your dentist. Keep your emergency dentist contact information handy, but remember the following tips so you can handle any common dental emergency with finesse.

  • A knocked-out tooth needs emergency dental treatment within the first hour to save it. Before transporting the tooth, hold it by the crown, and rinse it with water. Store it in your mouth or, if this is not possible, place the tooth in milk.
  • If a tooth becomes loose, see an emergency dentist immediately. Apply a cold compress to your face and take over-the-counter pain relievers if necessary.
  • With a broken or cracked tooth, rinse your mouth out with warm water, apply ice or a cold compress, and call your dentist in Columbia immediately.
  • If a crown or filling falls out, store it in a safe location, and call your dentist immediately. If your tooth is painful or sensitive, ask your dentist about using clove oil or dental cement to relieve pain.
  • Pain and swelling in your mouth may indicate an abscess, which could present a serious health threat. To relieve pain, rinse your mouth with salty water, and see your dentist as soon as possible.
  • Clean a bite or laceration to the lips, inner cheeks, or tongue with warm water. If bleeding is severe or won’t stop, immediately go to your local emergency room.
  • Jaw injuries can be serious. Apply a cold compress to your jaw and immediately head to your local emergency room.
  • The sudden onset of tooth pain could be caused by a foreign object lodged between your teeth. If an object is stuck between your teeth, try to remove it with dental floss. If that doesn’t work, contact an emergency dentist for an appointment.
  • If your braces are damaged, call your orthodontist and explain what happened. In some cases, emergency dental treatment is needed, but minor problems can often be handled at the next appointment.
