Recovery Tips from Oral Surgeons

dca-blog_oral-surgery-three-people

After oral surgery, such as wisdom tooth extraction and implant placement, recovery is your top concern. Any surgical procedure can be stressful, so it’s important to do everything your oral surgeon recommends both before and after the procedure. You will probably receive detailed instructions; these are intended to help avoid complications like trauma, infection and excessive discomfort. For a speedy and smooth recovery, follow them carefully. The general tips listed below apply to most oral surgeries and may be helpful.

  • Gum and Face Swelling

Face and gum swelling after surgery is normal. Many dental surgeons recommend elevating the head with pillows to reduce swelling. For the first 24 hours after your surgery, you may also use an ice pack. You may also experience some facial muscle stiffness and bruising during this period. Most symptoms are gone in seven to ten days. Call your oral surgeon if they persist.

  • Bleeding

Some bleeding may occur for up to 24 hours after a tooth extraction. Most dental surgeons will give specific instructions for using gauze to control bleeding. Biting on a moist black tea bag may help reduce excessive bleeding and increase clotting. If bleeding continues, contact your oral surgeon.

  • Dental Care

For the first day or so after surgery, avoid vigorous spitting and rinsing. If you can open your mouth wide enough, brush and floss gently, and rinse with plain water. After the first 24 hours, you may switch to a saline or saltwater rinse to help keep the incision clean.

  • Rest and Activity

After your surgery, plan to take it easy for at least two days. With your doctor’s permission, you may resume normal activities within 48 hours.

  • Pain Medication

Oral surgeons provide prescription pain medicine to manage discomfort during recovery. Follow all dosage instructions carefully. If you are given antibiotics, be sure to take the entire prescription, even if your symptoms go away sooner.

  • Smoking

Oral surgeons recommend not smoking for at least one full day after a procedure. Smoking can delay healing, and contribute to a painful complication called dry socket. Do not use chewing tobacco until the surgery site is fully healed.
