What Should You Do About Your Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth, also called third molars, are located in the back of your mouth. They erupt in your late teens or early twenties and may or may not be problematic. Although some wisdom teeth are perfectly healthy and functional, many people have misaligned or impacted wisdom teeth that interfere with other teeth or cause infection or swelling.

Other Symptoms Caused by Wisdom Teeth

Impacted wisdom teeth remain fully or partially trapped beneath gum tissue. They are unable to erupt normally due to their position in the jaw. In many cases, there are no symptoms present, but the following may occur and should be reported to your dentist:

  • Pain and stiffness in the jaw
  • Irritation of your tongue, gums or mouth due to a wisdom tooth erupting at an awkward angle
  • Infected, swollen gum tissue covering impacted wisdom teeth
  • Evidence of tooth crowding
  • Tooth decay, gingivitis or periodontitis

Home Treatment for Wisdom Teeth Pain

If your wisdom teeth are causing symptoms, schedule an appointment with your dentist right away. Here are a few tips for dealing with wisdom teeth pain and swelling until you can get medical attention.

  • Apply ice to the outside of your cheek for approximately 20 minutes. Remove it for 20 minutes, and repeat the process as needed. Don’t use heat.
  • Rinse your mouth with warm, salty water every two hours.
  • For face and jaw pain, use an over-the-counter pain reliever. Be sure to follow instructions carefully.
  • Never place an aspirin directly onto your gums; this can damage the tissues and cause even more pain.

When Wisdom Teeth Removal is the Best Option

Depending on your age and your oral health, wisdom teeth removal may be the best option. Some oral surgeons recommend wisdom teeth removal before patients reach the age of 20 even if no symptoms are present. Removing them later in life presents a higher risk of complications like infection and nerve damage. Your dentist can provide more specific information and determine if having your impacted wisdom teeth removed is appropriate.
