Gum disease is a global health issue. The condition, also known as periodontitis, affects nearly 20 percent of the world’s population. In the United States, more than 75 percent of adults are suffering from some form of gum disease and more than half are unaware of the condition. Follow brushing by rinsing with antimicrobial mouthwash, which can get between the teeth in a way that a toothbrush and other tools cannot. Look for products that are advertised to “kill germs that cause bad breath, plaque and gingivitis” and are approved by the American Dental Association.
