Handling a Dental Emergency

Dental Emergencies

A dental emergency is called an emergency for a reason—it shouldn’t be ignored. Ignoring injuries to your teeth or gums can put you at increased risk of permanent damage or lead to the need for more extensive and expensive dental care in the future. Finding an emergency dentist isn’t hard; most dentists make room in their daily schedules for emergency dental care. If you experience a dental emergency, call your dentist in Columbia and provide details of your condition. Even if the pain is intermittent or subsides, head to the dentist right away—pain is an indication that something is wrong and you need to get the proper dental care.

Following is a list of common dental emergencies and how to handle them until you can reach your dentist.

You can prevent injury to your teeth if you take the proper precautions, including wearing a mouthguard when you participate in sports activities that could put your teeth, lips, tongue, and jaw at risk. Avoid eating popcorn kernels and hard candies, and chewing ice, which can easily crack a tooth. Don’t try to break tape or other items with your teeth—use scissors. Occasionally, a dental emergency occurs regardless of how many precautions you take, so here’s an overview of what you should do—in addition to seeing an emergency dentist in Columbia.

1.     Tooth abscess. An abscess is a painful infection causing a pimple-like swelling in the gums, in spaces between the teeth and gums, and around the tooth’s root. Tooth abscesses can spread to other parts of the body if left untreated, so visit an emergency dentist in Columbia immediately, since an abscess is a serious condition.
2.     Toothache. If you have a toothache, rinse your mouth with warm water and gently floss to remove any food debris that may be lodged between teeth. If there’s swelling, apply a cold compress on the outside of your cheek or mouth, and take a pain reliever.
3.     Knocked-out tooth. A knocked-out tooth has the greatest chance of being saved if it’s returned to its socket within one hour of being knocked out. If a tooth gets knocked out, retrieve it, hold it by its crown, and rinse the root with water, being careful not to scrub the tooth or remove any attached tissue. Place the tooth in milk—or water with a pinch of salt—and see an emergency dentist in Columbia right away.
4.     Broken tooth. Save any pieces of the tooth that you can find and rinse your mouth and the pieces with warm water. Apply gauze to stop bleeding, use a cold compress to minimize swelling, and take pain relievers to alleviate discomfort.
5.     Lost filling. Use a piece of sugar-free gum—not sugar-filled gum, which will cause pain—to temporarily fill the exposed cavity until you can get to the dentist. Immediately call your dentist in Columbia for an appointment.
