How to React and Recover After Tooth Extraction

dca-blog_tooth-extraction-wisdom-teeth

Pulling teeth can relieve many dental problems and pain, but there may be some discomfort as you recover from the extraction. Here are some expert recommendations to help you get toothache relief and handle the healing process during the first week after a tooth extraction.

Day 1

Expect to experience the most pain for the first 12 hours after treatment, but be assured that it will steadily subside as painkillers provide toothache relief and the wound starts to heal. You may have tenderness in the tooth socket and some bleeding, swelling, and soreness around the gums. You can help speed up your recovery by following these trusted tips:

  • Rest for the first 24 hours after extraction, and for the next two days you should reduce all your activities.
  • For toothache relief, take painkillers as prescribed.
  • Apply an ice bag to swollen areas for ten-minute intervals to reduce swelling.
  • Gently rinse your mouth with warm saltwater to reduce your risk of infection.
  • Be sure not to spit forcefully or you could accidentally dislodge the protective blood clot from the socket.
  • Never drink with a straw during the first 24 hours.
  • Avoid the tooth extraction site when brushing and flossing.
  • Eat soft foods, adding in solid foods as you heal.
  • Use a pillow when lying down to prevent bleeding.

Day 2

There should not be much pain two days after the procedure. Yet if you suddenly feel a pulsing pain around the affected area, this may be the sign of a dangerous condition called dry socket, which demands urgent care. The only way to get toothache relief is to contact your dentist immediately so you can get proper treatment and medication. Keep in mind that swelling usually peaks at this point and gradually decreases each day after. Continue rinsing with warm saltwater and avoiding strenuous activities.

Day 3

Bleeding should have subsided after three days, but there could still be some swelling after pulling teeth. Keep on rinsing your mouth with warm saltwater to prevent infection. Any severe pain you experience at this time means that you must call your dentist immediately because you may be experiencing a complication that requires urgent care.

Day 5

Almost all of your swelling, soreness, and pain will be gone by this point. Continue rinsing your mouth with warm saltwater and practicing proper oral hygiene to reduce the risk of infection.

Day 7

Congratulations! You should have total toothache relief by now. It should be safe to start enjoying your normal activities.
