When Teeth Are Lost, Dentures Deliver New Smiles

Tooth loss can lead to poor self-esteem and problems eating and speaking normally, but there’s no need for anyone to suffer when dentures can solve these problems easily. Dentures are custom-made, removable appliances that replace lost teeth and surrounding gum tissue. Advanced dental technology has led to dentures that are far superior in fit, feel, and appearance than those made in the past. Various types of affordable quality dentures are available. Partial dentures fill in gaps and prevent missing teeth from causing healthy teeth to shift. Complete dentures are created when all teeth have been lost.

The process of getting dentures typically takes several weeks to complete. First, the dentist performs an evaluation and chooses the best dentures for the patient. Next, the teeth, gums, and jaw are accurately measured with impressions or molds so that the completed dentures will have an exact fit. Shape and color are matched to the patient’s tissues. Finally, the dentist places the permanent dentures and makes any needed adjustments to make them comfortable. Temporary tenderness, increased saliva production, and problems speaking or swallowing may occur, but will subside quickly. Since the gums and ridges of the human mouth change over time and dentures do not, dentures need to be replaced about every three years.

To get the best performance from your dentures, it’s essential to clean them every day. Be sure to use soft brushes and warm or cool water—hot water can warp dentures. Commercial denture soaks and electronic denture baths make cleaning simple. To prevent accidental breakage, dentures should be cleaned over a partially filled basin or soft towel. It’s preferable to remove dentures at night or at least for a few hours each day. Research has revealed that not doing so increases the risks of oral cancers and damage to oral tissues.
